Pretty places in Derbyshire
| PRETTY PLACES IN DERBYSHIRE |
Last weekend I explored some lovely parts of Derbyshire, and thought I would share some of hidden gems that I came across.
Derbyshire is so close to where I live and really easy to get to by rail or car, if anyone knows of any other pretty places to visit in the area, please do let me know as I would love to explore more!
1. ABBEY BROOK CACTUS NURSERY, MATLOCK
This is ran by the most wonderful husband and wife, who have been doing it for over 65 years. They clearly have such a passion for it, which is so lovely to see!
The place itself is very unassuming, so when you pull onto the carpark, which is where they live, you haven't come to the wrong place, just walk down the bank to the greenhouses. There are two, packed to the brim with cacti, I have honestly never seen so much cacti in one place!
2. SCARTHIN BOOKS, CROMFORD
Up a very narrow road overlooking a lake is Scarthin Books, a wonderful bookshop over three floors, with a cafe!
It is absolutely jam packed with old and new books, they have a awesome photography and art section too!
3. DOVEDALE STEPPING STONES
We did a walk to the stepping stones from the carpark on Ilam Park, which took roughly an hour. At this time of the year, I would highly recommend wellies or good walking footwear.
I did not go equipped and crossing the muddy fields in Docs was hilarious but took twice as long as it should have had we not stopped every second to put our shoes back on after they got stuck in the mud!
Also, at this time of year the river bank is quite high, so crossing the stones was tricky without good footwear too! The walk is very pretty, and Dovedale itself is gorgeous so would highly recommend visiting the area!
